Welcome letter from the Congress President of ESCD 2018

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This year it’s up to me to present the ESCD Congress, now in its fourteenth biennial event, because I have the honor to be the President.
I do not need to tell you how pleased I was in receiving this assignment despite the difficulties of organizing a major conference event in such challenging times. Besides, I feel the need to be up to the high level that has characterized the previous editions of these congresses, which enjoy such prestige and consideration in the European Dermatology thanks to the wisdom and commitment of the distinguished colleagues who preceded me.
Another special reason to me, for pride and joy, it is the opportunity to organize this event in my hometown. Milan is beautiful, cheerful, welcoming and exciting and I have never neglected my city, not even under the pressure of the unceasing rhythm of the frantic professional life like in all great metropolis.
This time I want to invite you to share with me a magnificent “four days experience”.
However, why in Milan? First, there is a wonderful conference center, which will host impeccably and comfortably the scientific program, the drafting of which we are finalizing. Then there is the availability of state-of-the-art, modern and functional hotels as you would expect in a metropolitan reality. Furthermore, food and wine are excellent because there are masters of culinary art. Then there is the fashion, because important stylists who create clothes of unrivaled value work here. Moreover, there is music, art, and culture. There is history, which houses the historic center, but which looks to the future as well. This is Milan, the pearl of Italian tourism and the economic capital of Italy.
With regard to the program, the scientific content will be selected with due attention to the historical moment. We shall try to capture the most significant changes in the allergic dermatological field, highlighting the most innovative aspects of present research, therapy and instrumental technology, without neglecting epidemiological aspects, those of prevention and pharmacology, which are of utmost importance.
We will revisit the natural history of many allergic skin diseases in light of the changes induced by the results of scientific research and the availability of new drugs, some of which are extraordinarily effective.
We will do our best to give a practical setting to the event by using innovative teaching techniques. We shall include concrete and effective content to create a positive impact on the daily work of participants, especially for younger participants.
The organizational secretary will communicate the program updates in real time on the congress website www.escd2018congress.com, which I invite you to consult.

I remain available to all of you, as my role requires.

Sincerely and affectionately, I invite you to attend numerous at the XIV ESCD in Milan from 17 to 20 October 2018.

Welcome letter from the President of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis

Dear Colleagues,

A warm welcome to the 14th Congress of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD) in Milan from the ESCD president! The ESCD is proud to organise the biannual congresses which normally attract a broad international audience in this subspecialty field. Since the last memorable event in September 2016 in Manchester much has happened in the area of contact dermatitis: While the epidemic of contact allergy to methylisothiazolinone is probably starting to decline, we face a new, fashion-driven epidemic of acrylate contact allergy and see worrying problems related to the application of glucose sensors all across Europe. New allergens are coming up all the time, or are now encountered in a new exposure context. All the while the “big three” (metals, fragrances and biocides) linger on as persisting problems, perhaps partly influenced by the impact of regulatory decisions. Beyond contact dermatitis and contact allergy occurring in patients due to their more or less particular everyday exposures, new problems, but also solutions, have arisen in the occupational arena.

Therefore, an update of all current aspects of contact dermatitis, irritant or allergic, of the diagnosis, therapy and prevention, is certainly due. I invite all clinicians, researchers and scientists in general who are interested or involved in this field to come to Milan. Together, we look forward to an exciting scientific program and the lively discussions which are a hallmark of an ESCD congress.
